Scheduling a Cyber Range Exercise

Follow these steps to set up and assign a Cyber Range Exercise exercise.

Platform role required: Technical Exercise Manager

Schedule an exercise

1. Navigate to Manage in the main navigation menu and select Schedule Cyber Range Exercise.

2. Select schedule exercise in the top right corner

Select a scenario

3. Select a scenario from the list.

Scenarios are templated storylines that form the basis of the exercise. Selecting a scenario shows you more detail to help you find the right template. You'll see four tabs:

  • Brief — shown to both participants and Technical Exercise Managers. It gives an overview of the scenario and any information participants need, such as range details and tool information.
  • Systems — outlines all systems involved in the scenario, including host names and IP addresses. The list is dynamic based on platform role, so it differs for Technical Exercise Managers and participants.
  • Network — a visual representation of the systems in the scenario. It's also dynamic based on platform role.
  • Debrief — contains the solution for the simulation. Technical Exercise Managers can view it at any point, but it only becomes visible to participants after they've completed the exercise and it has ended.

Select the select button under the scenario's title to confirm your choice.

Fill in exercise details

4. Provide a title and select the dates the exercise will run.

An exercise's start date can be as soon as five minutes from now. That said, we recommend allowing at least 24 hours so participants have time to receive instructions through your organization's communication channels.

Invite participants

5. Select individual participants or teams to add to a group or groups.

Individual users still need to be placed into a group. Search for participants in the add users search bar, select them, and then select move to a new or existing group.

You need at least one group with at least one participant to proceed. Each group can have a maximum of 10 participants. If you want to assign the exercise to more than 10 people, add multiple groups — this also gives participants a chance to challenge each other.

There's a limit of 10 groups per exercise. To assign the exercise to a larger number of participants, reach out to your Customer Success Manager.

If multiple groups are created for a single simulation, each group gets its own network and VM instances.

Making changes to participants and groups

Participants can be added or removed at any point — before the exercise start date and while it's live. Removing a participant during a live exercise means their performance data will be lost.

Participants can be moved between groups at any point, and new groups can be added at any time. To remove a group once an exercise is live, remove all participants from it.

Review and publish

6. Select the next step: confirm button in the top right, then select confirm and publish.

A green banner will appear in the top right, confirming the exercise has been scheduled. Participants will receive an email notification.

The exercise will also appear in the managed by me area of Cyber Team Sim.
