How to amend, start, end, and delete a crisis simulation exercise after it's been published.
Platform role required: Crisis Sim Manager
Exercise states
Every exercise sits in one of three states:
- Pending — the start date is in the future, or no start date has been set and the exercise hasn't been manually started.
- Active — the start date has passed, or the exercise has been manually started. Participants can now take part.
- Ended — the deadline has passed, all assigned participants have completed the exercise, or a manager has closed it manually.
Amending an exercise
To edit a published exercise:
- Go to Exercise in the main navigation menu and select Immersive Crisis Simulations.
- Find the exercise in the Managed by me or All Exercises area.
- Click on the exercise to open it.
- Select the Edit button below the exercise title.
- Make sure to 'Confirm and Publish' any amendments made, to save these changes.
For pending exercises, you can change the title, the scenario, the start date and deadline, and (for single player and drill exercises) the participants assigned. Select Confirm and Publish to save your changes.
One thing to note on participants: only people you add during the edit will receive an assignment email. Existing participants won't get a duplicate notification.
If your exercise is already active, what you can edit depends on the exercise type. For an active single player exercise, you can still change the title and the deadline. For an active drill or presentation, you can't make meaningful edits — you'll need to end the exercise and schedule a new one. Before you do that, check whether any participants have already completed it, as ending the exercise will prevent them from doing anything further.
Starting an exercise manually
Exercises start automatically on the date you set, but you can start one early if you need to. Go to the Managed by me or All Exercises area, filter by Pending, select the exercise, and click Play Exercise. Manually starting an exercise overrides any previously set start date.
Single-screen Presentation View
When you run a presentation exercise, you'll use the single-screen Presentation View. This brings the scenario, incident details, response options, and supporting materials together on one screen — no juggling multiple windows.
The view includes an optional timer for each inject to help keep the session moving. You can also navigate back to previous injects in read-only mode, which is useful for reviewing earlier decisions mid-session. Everything displayed on screen — including static media — also appears in the companion app, so participants following along on their own devices don't miss anything.
Ending an exercise
An exercise ends automatically when the deadline is reached or all participants have completed it. If you need to close one early, go to Managed by me or All Exercises, filter by Active, select the exercise, and click Close Exercise.
Closing an exercise stops further participation immediately, so check completion status before you do it.
Deleting an exercise
Deleting an exercise removes it from the platform permanently, along with all completion data. We don't recommend deleting any exercise that participants engaged with.
To delete an exercise, open it and select Delete exercise.
You can only delete a closed exercise. If the exercise is still active, close it first. If it's pending, start it, close it, then delete it.
If you've accidentally deleted an exercise, contact Customer Support with the details. The team can look into recovering the exercise record — though note that it isn't possible to recover a scenario, only an exercise.
